Echium pininana 'Snow Tower'
What you get
Echium pininana 'Snow Tower' is a supremely architectural plant with a large rosette of glaucus blue-green leaves that are covered in fine hairs. It adds great value to an exotic border - even without the flower. The Echium is a biennual or triannual and will form a thick hairy trunk in its second or third year. In early spring it will begin to grow its flower stem that will quickly erupt to a height of upto 5m and grow a spike that is covered with thousands of small white flowers. Your neighbours will be astounded if you can get them to flower. Pininana is not the easiest plant to flower, but if you succeed its worth all the effort.
Planting and care
Best planted in full sun and well drained soil. To get the best out of this plant you have to risk it in the garden. It has a tap root to hold up the large flower stem that you won't get in a pot. You can cover with fleece for very short periods throughout the winter, but always uncover as soon as possible.
