About
Blechnum montanum (Mountain kiokio) is a Blechnum from the mountains of New Zealand where it grows in cold, wet areas. It's clump forming to about 50cm and spreads by a creeping rhizome. The new fronds appear bronze in spring turning a glossy dark green as they mature
Planting and care
Ferns generally prefer shade and a moist position, especially in the hottest parts of the day. Most shady garden borders or woodland areas are perfect. If the area you are planting on is dry, or you are planting in summer make sure they are well watered until they are established. You should not need to feed your ferns in the garden, but a good mulch will help greatly.
Soil
Ferns will grow on most soils as long as your soil is not at the extreme ends of the pH scale (on chalk). Adding organic matter to your soil will help retain moisture in a sandy soil or open up the structure of a clay soil to stop water logging. Adding a good mulch will also help keep down weeds.
