About

Hedychium griffithianum is a small species with slender stems that tend to arch with the weight of its narrow, green leaves. In its native habitat, the high altitude of the Himalayas, it tends to grow horizontally or downwards from stream banks. The flowers are white and very delicate looking, and have contrasting pale red stamens. It is a good garden ginger growing to 1m in height and is hardy down to -10 or potentially even lower if mulched.

Origin

Himalayas India, Butan and Nepal

Planting and care

Best planted in full sun or light shade in moist, humus rich soil. It will respond well to feeding throughout the growing season. Plant deep and give a good mulch for winter protection, or to guarentee full protection you can lift part of the corm and store it frost free during winter.
