About

Phyllostachys nigra, the Black Bamboo is the most popular and widely known bamboo. The culms emerge green then gradually turn black over time. The leaves are smallish and green. A great plant in the garden wether used as a pot plant or as screening or a stand alone specimen. This is a large sized bamboo growing 4-10m in height with a spead of 1-2m in 10 years like all Phyllostachys this is a running bamboo but usually stays clumping for 10 years before starting to form a grove.

Planting and care

Phyllostachys nigra is best planted in full sun of light shade make sure its kept moist for the first 6 months after planting untill it is established the best food a bamboo can have is its own leaves and culm sheafs so leave them to mulch the plant. If your worried about the bamboo running you can use bamboo barrier or grow in a pot using a good soil based compost and keeping well fed and watered.
