About

Aloe arborescens is a many branched succulent from South Africa, reaching 2-3m in its native habitat - but considerably less in cool temperate climates like the UK. The plant has woody stems topped with rosettes of very fleshy long tapering light green leaves that have wavy toothed edges. The flowers are orange to red and look a bit like a red hot poker. It will take temperatures down to freezing for short periods, but will take -4/-5 if completely dry in a greenhouse. Best in full sun and makes an excellent large potted plant.

Care and Planting

The key thing with most Aloes is to keep them dry in winter, and most of them will also have to be kept frost free. They make very interesting pot plants and do have amazing flowers.

Uses

Best as a pot plant, but if you live in a mild area you can plant them in the ground in a sunny position - best right up against the wall of your house.
