Planting and care
Ferns generally prefer shade espacally in the hottest parts of the day and a moist position most shady garden borders are perfect. Ferns also grow well in woodland if the area you are planting is on the dry side or you are planting in summer make sure they are well watered untill they are established. You should not need to feed your ferns in the garden but a good mulch will help greatly.
Soil
Ferns will grow on most soils as long as your not at the extreme ends of the pH scale (on chalk ) if your garden is somewhere in between soil drainage is more important adding organic matter to help retain moisture in a sandy soil or to open up the structure of a clay soil to stop water logging a good mulch will also help and keep down weeds.
Uses
Great plants for the shady garden border, woodland planting creating a fernery or stumpery or as pot plants for a shady spot.
