Name

Borinda nujiangensis

What you get

You will receive a 7.5ltr pot with 3-4 culms standing around 5ft tall.

Borinda nujiangensis has some of the most slender leaves of any of the species. The new shoots appear a bloomy blue, with sheaths that have a beautiful reddish marbling. The culms are slender for a Borinda and should reach 4-5m in height in the UK. Not the easiest Bamboo to find, but great for a shady spot.

Care and Planting

This Bamboo is not difficult to look after. It is best planted in a light shaded position that is not exposed. If you are giving it a more sunny site, it would prefer afternoon shade. Plant it using some organic matter, and make sure it is watered in well. Do not let it dry out in the first six months, after this if it is in the ground it should look after itself. The best food a Bamboo can have is its own leaves and culm sheaths so leave these on the ground to mulch the Bamboo.

Soil

Any reasonable soil will do, and the addition of organic matter can only help.

Container growing

As this is a clumping Bamboo it is well suited to being grown in a container. Use a good loam based compost, do not let it dry out and feed it regularly.

Height and Spread

Should reach 4-5m and like most borinda it will do this quickly, within 2-3 years. The plant will spread to 1.5m in ten years.

Evergreen

Most Bamboos are evergreen, and they look great in the winter when everything else is bare and you can then really see the movement of the culms.

Hardy

Borinda tends not to be the hardiest of Bamboo, this one should take down to -8 without damaging. If we have a winter like 2010/2011 they may be taken to the ground, but they do usually come back from that quite quickly.
