Chusquea montana
About
Chusquea montana is a short robust member of the species. It comes from high altitude in Southern Chile, and it only grows 1-3m in height. It is easy to distinguish because of its swollen nodes and very short branches. It has a compact, upright and tidy habit and has narrow, short leaves. A great bamboo to give texture and form to a border where not too much height is needed. Hardy to -18.
What you get
You will receive a 4ltr pot, with a bamboo standing 1ft tall with 5-6 culms.
Planting and Care
Plant with the addition of some organic matter and water in well. Do not let the plant dry out. If it's in the ground ensure to water it for the first 6 months, after this amount of time it should look after itself. However if in a pot it will still require regular watering. The best food a bamboo can have is its own dead leaves and culm sheaths, so leave them to mulch the base of the plant.
Planting position
Chusquea montana will grow in full sun or semi shade.
Soil
Any reasonable soil is ok, add organic matter to help the bamboo establish.
Container growing
Chusquea montana is a clump forming bamboo, so it is suited to growing in a pot. Use a good loam based compost, dont let it dry out and feed it regularly.
Height and Spread
This Bamboo can reach 7-9ft/3m in height. It is clump forming and should spread about 1m in ten years.
