About
Polystichium polybletharum is a must-have fern - it's the first fern to put in the garden. Its glossy, dark green fronds almost look varnished, and the new fronds that appear in spring are covered in golden bristles that gradularly turn dark green. It's evergreen, and always looks fresh. It will grow to 45cm in height with a spread of 60cm.
Planting and care
Best grown in semi shade, but will tolerate some sun. Plant in moist, rich soil.
Ferns generally prefer shade and moist soil, especially in the hottest parts of the day. Most shady garden borders or woodland areas are perfect. If the area you are planting on is dry, or you are planting in summer make sure they are well watered until they are established. You should not need to feed your ferns in the garden, but a good mulch will help greatly.
Soil
Ferns will grow on most soils as long as your soil is not at the extreme ends of the pH scale (on chalk). Adding organic matter to your soil will help retain moisture in a sandy soil or open up the structure of a clay soil to stop water logging. Adding a good mulch will also help keep down weeds.

Great plants for the shady garden border, woodland planting, creating a fernery or as pot plants for a shady spot.
