About
Pleioblastus fortunei variegatus is one of the best white and green variegated bamboos, it has pale green canes and narrow dark green leaves with cream stripes. It is semi dwarf with a mound forming habit, it can reach 1m in height and should spread about 1-1.5m in ten years. Hardy.
Planting and Care
Best planted in full sun or light shade with the addition of organic matter. After its planted make sure it's kept moist for atleast the first 6 months. When in the ground, once established it will mostly look after itself. Prune hard in early spring to rejuvenate and get fresh colour.
The best food a bamboo can have is its own leaves and culm sheafs, so leave them to mulch the plant. If you're worried about the bamboo running you can use a bamboo barrier or grow it in a pot using a good soil based compost, keeping it well fed and watered.
Planting position
Pleioblastus fortunei will grow in full sun or semi shade. It's happy as a woodland plant or makes a great colourful pot plant.
Soil
Any reasonable soil is ok, add organic matter to help the bamboo establish.
Container growing
Pleioblastus fortunei is well suited to growing in a pot, use a good loam based compost, don't let it dry out and feed regularly.
