About
Fargesia Jiuzhaigou 1 Is a great plant with a narrow, upright habit and culms that first appear deep green, age to a red-purple and end up a pale orange/yellow. The leaves are small and delicate. This Bamboo is best planted so it gets 3-4 hours of sun a day, ideally in the morning as this helps get the intense red culm colour. This intense colour also tends to happen if the plant is grown in a pot. This Bamboo was collected in Jiuzhaigou Park in Northern Sichuan in 1986 by a German named Stephen Wagner. This is a clump forming bamboo that will reach 10-12ft in height and has proven to be a great garden bamboo.
Planting and care
Best planted in semi shade. Plant with the addition of some organic matter and water in well. Do not let the plant dry out in the first six months, and after this if it's in the ground it should look after itself. Pots of bamboo will continue to need watering. The best food a bamboo can have is its own dead leaves and culm sheaths so leave them to mulch the base of the plant.
Planting position
Fargesia Red Panda is best grown in semi shade and a sheltered position, out of cold winds. If growing in a sunny site try and give it afternoon shade.
Soil
Any reasonable soil is ok, add organic matter to help the bamboo establish.
Container growing
Fargesia Red Panda is a clump forming bamboo, so it is suited to being grown in a pot. Use a good loam-based compost, don't let it dry out and feed regularly.
Height and Spread
This Bamboo can reach 12ft/4m in height. It is clump forming and should spread about 1m in ten years.
