Musa sikkimensis is not as hardy as basjoo, but is well worth the extra risk if you already have basjoo. The leaves of sikkimensis are thicker and more leathery than basjoo, and they have a red underside, a red mid rib and also sometimes have red stripes. A really delectable plant for the exotic border.

Planting and care

Plant in rich, moist soil in a sheltered position and provide plenty of food and water in the growing season. You will have to protect it in the winter; cut the stem down to about 4ft after the first frost, then cover the stem with a section of corrorgated land drain, fill with straw then place a pot on top.

This plant also makes a great pot plant, but use a good soil based compost and provide plenty of food and water in the growing season.
