About

Musella lasiocarpa is an impressive banana with glaucous green leaves that are stiff and upright in habit. It will form a dense clump over time and can reach 1.5m in height. The really amazing thing about this banana is its flower which looks like a rich yellow water lilly. It takes 3-4 years before it will flower - you will suddenly see the stem start to thicken in spring. When the flower does appear it will last for months.

Planting and care

Best in full sun or light shade and provide plenty of food and water in the growing season. If planting in the garden cut the leaves off and then cover it with a dust bin full of straw to protect it in most winters. It also makes a great pot plant. Hardy down to -8 with protection.
